Portland Cider Co. Releases Seventh Annual Community Cider in Support of Partners For a Hunger-Free Oregon
CLACKAMAS, Ore. – October 28, 2022 – During the month of September, Portland Cider Company collected donated backyard fruit from neighbors throughout the Portland Metro Area. The donations were sorted, washed and pressed, and now the fruits of their labor are available for all to drink in the form of Community Cider. Proceeds help support Partners For a Hunger-Free Oregon and their Hunger-Free Schools campaign.
The seventh annual Community Cider, made with a beautiful blend of apples and pears grown all around the Portland Metro Area, is juicy and medium-sweet, due to the large number of pears received from donors. Every can contains countless varieties of hyperlocal apples and pears donated by community members as part of the company’s annual Fruit Forward Drive. The flavor profile varies a bit each year, depending on the specific blend of fruits collected, but it’s always made with 100% local, community-donated fruit.
“Year after year, the community shows up in such a generous way,” said Portland Cider Co-owner Lynda Parrish. “It’s so gratifying to see bushel after bushel of local fruit delivered to our cidery–fruit that may not have had a use otherwise–to be turned into a beautiful, crowd-sourced cider for a great cause.”
Net proceeds from all Community Cider sold will be donated to Hunger Free Schools, a campaign led by non-profit Partners for a Hunger-free Oregon (PHFO). The organization, which successfully advocated for accessible school breakfast and expanded access to school meals, is now focused on ensuring free, universal school meals for every K-12 student in Oregon. In the 2023 legislative session, PHFO will be bringing forward a bill to provide universal school meals to every child in Oregon. This effort would impact 560,000 students in Oregon K-12 schools by ensuring that all students have access to healthy, nutritious meals at school at no cost. Currently, around 300,000 children in Oregon qualify for free school meals.
